Cross with her father, Abby, 17, boards a flight to Greece, but gets hopelessly lost and ends up in the wrong village.

Alone, with very little money, no Greek and no way to contact her friend Jackie, who has lined up a bar job for her, Abby realises she has to stand on her own two feet for the first time...

She meets Stella, who runs the local ouzeri - a rough and ready eatery were farmers gather to drink and take refuge from their domestic lives.

Stella does not need a naive young English girl hanging around, and the ouzeri is not the glamorous bar that Abby had bargained for.

But when events throw them together, the situation brings to the boil tensions that have been brewing for years, the ripples drawing in other people in the village, threatening Abby's ability to ever leave, culminating in shocking unforeseen events and the uncovering of dark secrets that change peoples' thinking about themselves and others permanently.

My favorite in the series is the first...but the third book in the series is a great story of a young lady by the name of Abby running away from England to a job in Greece...only she lands in the wrong place but is able to land a job in a small Greek cafe with Stella and Vasso's. It is time for Abby to grow up. She is a good girl and learns that home is not what she had in her mind. Abby becomes part of the village and despite Stella's initial reservation becomes a very close friend, Vasso is an abusive, controlling and lazy husband. Can't wait to read the next book in this series...read this one on the beach! I felt like I was in Greece! Don't get the Greek Village and Greek Island Series confused...I did! :)

The Gypsy Dream Book Four of the Greek Village Series Sara Alexi 9781484873311 Books Reviews

There is a saying "it takes a Greek to know a Greek". Whether the author, England born Sara Alexi, is of Greek descent, she certainly understands the Greek mindset and customs. Her characters are universal, especially the Greek male. Her portrayal of the peasant Stavros, an overweight and cruel husband, is typical of many poorly-educated Greek men that of a wife is subservient to the husband, and it's her fault she cannot have children. Ms. Alexi shows compassion for the gypsies that roam throughout Greece and other European countries. Her writing is easy to read and her descriptions of the small Greek isles are vividly portrayed, enabling the reader a feeling of being there. You sense the hot Mediterranean sun warming your body. I read two of her Greek Village Collection and they follow true to pattern, only the plot changes. Ya Sou, Sara Alexi.

The new character Abby the young girl from England also, adds interesting slant and events. This book also does excellent job in bring out both Stella and Vasso's personalities and rolls in village. Only two minor points for me were someone as young as Abby making a snap decision and within less 48 hours she is in small Greek village in the Peloponnese just off the coast. The second is It seems Juliet it the books following the first has become the source for all correct solutions to problems of the other villagers. Strange how after her struggles in book one it was her friend Michelle who offered up solutions for Juliet.

These two items are minor because once again Ms. Alexi does an outstanding job with descriptions of the village, town and Greece in General. Good book! Good reading you won'not be disappointed!
This book confused me at first. I thought it was about Abby, the British girl who runs away to Greece (no spoilers), but it was actually about someone she meets on her first day in a tiny village. If I could, I would rather give it 3 1/2 stars, but 3 stars seemed mean-spirited, as I enjoyed the story, while it was not at all my usual reading matter! The beginning was a bit bleak compared to the usual "Greece" stories, but this atmosphere improves much later on. There are a few formatting and grammar mistakes, but it's really too minor to mention. The story is basically light, in some ways a little predictable, and although the style flows nicely, the timeline confused me. So much happens in a few days, which to the reader feels like weeks gone by -- it's as if the days in the village are endlessly long. The problems of the main characters are resolved a little too smoothly in the end -- I felt as if there should be a sequel to tell us how it all panned out. (Is there a sequel, maybe?) Well worth reading, if not madly exciting, but I enjoyed it.
Over the last week I have been relishing the book by Sara Alexi, "The Gypsy's Dream." Having read the first three, in the series, I can say that her books have common threads . . . simple ones, like a cat walks through; or a goat's bell tinkles, the lonely donkey brays sadly. A village full of pent up humanity . . . love and callousness . . . hunger and understanding. The sun shines warmly, and a walker may take us up into the hill, where there are visions from the top while we rest under the cool breezy trees . . . We look out towards the village and what emerges as a beautiful vista is the map of this world . . . the shadows are deep and compelling, and the houses, white with reflection from a brilliant sun . . . The watcher thinks about her life . . amazed at the beauty of the village from on high . . . and ponders her next step before she walks back down towards her troubles . . . renewed and ready . . .

These books have given me such joy and insight into life, and people . . . hope and dreams, love and sorrow. I enjoy them so much I wish they would never end . . . I wish I could be there . . . to help support the characters in their endeavors and passions . . . to weave the pattern of the map of their lives . . . as they intertwine and lead each other into the light of inner peace, understanding and acceptance.
I must say this is the best book I've read in years. The life of a teenage runaway from England from this day and age who runs off to a tiny village in Greece by accident, is absolutely wonderful. she learns fast how to do without any modern conveniences and how life really is. Her wonderful "muse" is a woman she works for, a Gypsy, who's story runs parallel in the book with hers. The Gypsy has to learn to love her heritage and respect herself and this little teenager teaches her that. She teaches the child to grow up with grace. It only takes place for one week but you feel you've watched several years of their life take place. The mysteries in the village bring the story much meat and excitement and romance. It's worth every word and I hope to find many books by this author...I'd read every one. Her mind is genius!
